![]() ![]() I attempted to divide one number by the other but this led nowhere. These were meaningless to me at the time. SONY X70 RECORD TIME CALC UPGRADELater I decided to upgrade and I was faced with strange numbers like 1/2.3 or 1/1.7. The size of the sensor was not of interest to me as the idea of this type of camera was so new and different. Then I purchased my first digital camera, a Canon S95. There was no doubt about film size, No one had to explain it to me. My cameras were 35mm, 2 1/4 x2 1/4 and a 4x5 Speed Graphic. Up until a few years ago all of my experience was with film. Just in case there's any confusion, the 1" type sensor is approximately: It's the only way I would know of meaningfully comparing it to M43 and APS-C sensors. Perhaps Nikon 1 should be renamed Nikon 0.6244?īesides 1" not being as big of a jump from 1/1.7" than what most think (and what Sony has led us to believe), 1/1.7" is less of a jump from 1/2.3" than what I had thought Īnyone looking at a camera purchase based on sensor size know that it's the area that's important, and that's just simple arithmetic - width x height. The Nikon 1 AW1 also features a 1-inch 14.2 megapixel CMOS image sensor for superior image quality even in low light conditions. Incorporating 25-400mm/F.28-4.0 LEICA DC lens and 1-inch MOS sensor a large and light-grabbing 1.0-inch, 20.2 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor. Seriously? While there has been debate on these forums about the use of the term 1" sensor, I've never come across anyone who has felt misled into purchasing on the basis of exaggerated sensor size claims. So Sony really did, and still is pushing the 1-inch exaggeration, but the name, "1-inch" is the heart of the problem, so now, probably the majority believe the 1" sensor is much larger than it really is. ![]() Sony clearly states it's a 1" sensor, which is " massive" :Ĭompared to the average point and shoot 1/2.3" sensor size, the RX100 boasts a large, specially developed 1" Exmor CMOS sensor to capture more light from your scene and reproduce every stunning detail with greater fidelity….]]] Look at how large the sensor looks on their page, probably more than an inch tall on most monitors. Maybe Sony has toned down the rhetoric recently, but this is pure deception, and is currently on Sony’s own, active online store, where they’re currently selling the RX100 for $449.99. ![]()
